Intellectual Property
What is Copyright?
Copyright is a form of intellectual property protection granted by law to creators of original literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works. It gives the creator exclusive rights to reproduce, distribute, perform, display, and create derivative works from their creation.
In India, copyright is governed by the Copyright Act, 1957. Copyright protection is automatic upon creation of the work — you do not need to register to own copyright. However, registration creates a public record of ownership and is essential for enforcing your rights in court.
Copyright registration is especially important for software developers, authors, musicians, filmmakers, designers, and businesses that rely on original content as a core part of their brand or product.
Automatic Protection
Copyright exists from the moment of creation — registration strengthens and evidences your claim.
Legal Evidence of Ownership
A registered copyright serves as prima facie evidence in court disputes.
Lifetime + 60 Years
Copyright lasts for the lifetime of the author plus 60 years after their death.
Covers Multiple Work Types
Protects books, software, music, films, paintings, scripts, and more.
Prevents Unauthorised Use
Gives you the right to take legal action against anyone who copies or misuses your work.
Licensable Asset
Copyright can be licensed or assigned to others, generating royalty income.
