What is Professional Tax?

Professional Tax is a state-level tax levied on individuals who earn income through employment, trade, calling, or profession. It is governed by the respective state's Professional Tax Act and is one of the few taxes that states are constitutionally empowered to levy.

In Karnataka, Professional Tax is levied under the Karnataka Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act, 1976. Every employer must obtain a Professional Tax Registration Certificate (PTRC) and deduct professional tax from employees' salaries each month.

Self-employed professionals — including doctors, lawyers, chartered accountants, architects, and consultants — must obtain a Professional Tax Enrolment Certificate (PTEC) and pay professional tax directly to the government.

Mandatory for Employers

All employers with employees in PT-applicable states must register and deduct PT from salaries.

Self-Employed Professionals

Doctors, lawyers, CAs, architects, and consultants must register and pay PT independently.

Two Types of Registration

PTRC for employers (deduct from employees) and PTEC for self-employed professionals.

Max ₹2,500 Per Year

The Constitution caps Professional Tax at ₹2,500 per person per year.

State-Specific Rules

PT rates and slabs vary by state — Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and others.

Deductible Expense

Professional Tax paid is deductible from gross salary under Section 16 of the Income Tax Act.

  • Step 3 – Submit a copy of the application to the tax department as well.
  • Step 4 – The tax authority scrutinises the application to verify all information and documents.
