Food Safety Compliance
What is FSSAI Registration?
FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) is the apex regulatory body governing food safety in India, established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Every person or entity involved in the manufacture, processing, storage, distribution, or sale of food products must obtain FSSAI registration or license before commencing operations.
FSSAI registration is categorised into three tiers — Basic Registration, State License, and Central License — based on the scale and nature of the food business. The appropriate category is determined by annual turnover, production capacity, and the type of food activity carried out.
Operating a food business without a valid FSSAI license is a punishable offence under the FSS Act, attracting fines up to ₹5 lakhs and imprisonment. A valid FSSAI license also builds consumer trust and is required for listing on food delivery platforms like Swiggy and Zomato.
Legal Compliance
Mandatory for all food businesses — manufacturers, processors, traders, restaurants, and importers.
Consumer Trust
Display the FSSAI logo on your products to signal quality and safety to consumers.
Food Delivery Platforms
Required for listing on Swiggy, Zomato, and other food aggregator platforms.
Import of Food Products
Central FSSAI License is mandatory for importing any food product into India.
Avoid Heavy Penalties
Operating without FSSAI can attract fines up to ₹5 lakhs and business closure.
Tiered Licensing
Three categories — Basic, State, and Central — based on turnover and business scale.
Types of FSSAI Registration & License
- Basic Registration — for petty food businesses with annual turnover up to ₹12 lakhs.
- State License — for medium food businesses with turnover between ₹12 lakhs and ₹20 crores.
- Central License — for large businesses with turnover above ₹20 crores, importers, and exporters.
- Manufacturers, processors, re-packers, re-labellers, and storage units need a license based on capacity.
- Restaurants, hotels, dhabas, and cloud kitchens require State or Central License based on scale.
- E-commerce food businesses and food delivery platforms require Central License.
